Person-Centred Therapy

Discover healing through Person-Centred Therapy – a compassionate, non-judgemental space where you’re truly heard, supported, and empowered to grow.

What is Person-Centred Therapy?

Person-Centred Therapy (PCT)—also known as Client-Centred Therapy—is a humanistic approach to psychological treatment developed by Carl Rogers in the 1940s. It’s based on the belief that every individual has an innate capacity for personal growth, healing, and self-actualization, given the right supportive conditions.

Core Principles of Person-Centred Therapy

  • Unconditional Positive Regard – The therapist offers total acceptance and warmth toward the client, without judgment or conditions.
  • Empathy – The therapist seeks to deeply understand the client’s thoughts and feelings from their perspective.
  • Congruence (Genuineness) – The therapist is real and transparent, not hiding behind a professional mask.
  • Client as the Expert PCT holds the view that clients are the best experts on their own lives, and healing happens when they are truly heard and understood.
  • Non-directive Approach – The therapist doesn’t direct the session or give advice. Instead, they follow the client’s lead and trust in their inner capacity for change.

What Happens in a Session?

  • The client is encouraged to speak freely in a warm, non-judgmental space.
  • The therapist listens with care and reflects back the client’s feelings to foster insight and clarity.
  • There’s no structured agenda; the focus is on self-exploration, emotional processing, and personal growth.

Research Evidence Supporting Person-Centred Therapy

Proven Effectiveness

Numerous studies have shown that PCT is highly effective for a wide range of emotional and psychological concerns, including anxiety, depression, grief, and relationship difficulties.

A comprehensive meta-analysis by Elliott et al. (2013) reviewed over 190 studies and concluded that Person-Centred and other humanistic therapies consistently lead to significant improvements in psychological well-being.

A Strong Therapeutic Relationship

PCT places the therapeutic relationship at the heart of healing. Research confirms that qualities like empathy, genuineness, and unconditional positive regard—all central to PCT—are among the most powerful predictors of positive therapy outcomes.

Norcross & Lambert (2019) highlight that these relational qualities contribute significantly to effective therapy across all modalities.

Empowering and Deeply Valued by Clients

  • Clients often describe feeling genuinely heard, respected, and empowered.
  • PCT supports self-trust, emotional resilience, and personal clarity.
  • It’s especially helpful for those seeking space to explore their identity, emotions, and relationships in a supportive, non-judgmental setting.

In Summary

Person-Centred Therapy is a gentle yet powerful approach that creates the conditions for deep healing and growth. Rooted in empathy, respect, and authenticity, it helps people reconnect with their inner strengths and live more fully and authentically.
