Therapy for ADHD

At Serendipity Psychology, we understand the complexities of living with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). We offer specialised therapies tailored to support those with ADHD, embracing neurodiversity and promoting mental well-being.

What is ADHD?

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a type of neurodevelopmental condition characterised by a persistent pattern of inattention, difficulties focusing and / or hyperactivity–impulsivity, feeling extremely active and finding it hard to think before doing or saying things. You may find it harder to set priorities or handle general daily activities such as organising a timetable or getting ready without distraction.

Those who have ADHD would also be considered ‘neurodivergent’ or ‘neurodiverse’ which are two other ways of framing this way of being, thinking and responding that we feel is a more supportive and accepting way to consider difference and diversity and embracing the idea that our brains all work differently. Those with ADHD might struggle in different ways but particularly because they might feel unaccepted by the ‘neurotypical’ people who currently outnumber them.

Symptoms can start at a very young age, with diagnoses happening as early as 5 or 6. This does not mean that someone can not be diagnosed later in life.

What is the treatment for ADHD?

The main treatment for ADHD symptoms recommended by the National Institute for Health and Excellence (NICE) guidelines is pharmaceutical interventions. This would need to be discussed with a medical professional. For many, simply knowing they have ADHD can be powerful information and help them to access more support and learning about themselves, so medication isn’t always needed.

  • ADHD itelf is not a mental health condition and as such doesn’t necessarily need to be ‘treated’. However, those with
  • ADHD are significantly more at risk of developing mental health difficulties which may benefit from some support.
  • Combining medication with psychological interventions is recommended for the following reasons:
    • Coping strategies
    • Identifying barriers to treatment
    • Psychoeducation around the condition and how it affects individuals
    • Behaviour therapy using behaviour management techniques

If psychological therapy is thought to be important and beneficial, the recommended intervention is usually CBT.
