CBT is a therapy considered to be one of the most widely used, evidence-based modes of practice for treating mental health problems. It focuses on the development of individualised coping strategies that target the solving of current problems and changing unhelpful patterns of thinking and behaviour.
The CBT model is based on a combination of the basic principles from behavioural and cognitive psychology and is different from historical approaches to psychotherapy, such as the psychoanalytic approach, where the therapist looks for the unconscious meaning behind behaviours and then formulates a diagnosis. CBT is much more ‘problem-focused’ and ‘action-oriented’, meaning it is used to treat specific problems related to mental health disorders. The therapist’s role is to assist the client in finding and practising effective strategies to address the identified goals and decrease their symptoms.
Since its initial founding, CBT has been vastly researched and developed. As a result, it has many adaptations and additional protocols that our team utilise in their clinical practice. Examples include adaptations for those with neurodevelopmental diagnoses such as autistic spectrum disorder (ASD), and protocols for treating trauma known as prolonged exposure therapy / trauma-focused CBT.
