Hi, my name is Stephen. I believe the essence of therapy is being listened to in a non-judgemental, compassionate way — what is sometimes described in psychotherapy as unconditional positive regard. The second building block of good therapy is the relationship of trust and openness that develops from this, so that you feel comfortable giving voice to your emotions and thoughts within an environment of trust and confidentiality.
My specialism is Transactional Analysis, which is a humanistic, relational approach. It is based on the belief that every human being is fundamentally good at heart and can be helped to bring into awareness the unconscious factors and decisions within the past ‘script’ of their life that may be causing obstacles, and sometimes pain or harm. It also holds that each person can be supported to make fresh choices that are truly their own, more closely aligned with their values, hopes and desires. As a consequence, real change is possible and the negativities within that ‘script’ can be overcome.
After 20 years in ministry, providing emotional and spiritual support, I decided to train as a psychotherapist. I am currently in my second year of working towards my CTA and MSc. My extensive professional experience supporting people through many distressing situations — such as ill health, bereavement and relationship difficulties — has shown me the value of good mental health. Experiences in my own life, and in my roles as a husband, father and friend, especially during times of personal crisis or loss, have deepened my passion for helping others.
If you are considering therapy, I would encourage you to contact Serendipity, whether you are experiencing mental health difficulties or simply looking for new ways to approach life’s challenges. You may have tried therapy in the past. Many people find that, the second time around with a different therapist, it can make a real difference. I hope you find the support you are looking for.
Stephen delivers therapeutic work under the direct clinical supervision of an HCPC‑registered Practitioner Psychologist. Their work forms part of a psychologist‑led care plan with regular case reviews and oversight.
