Gestalt Therapy

Gestalt Therapy helps you feel more whole and present by exploring your thoughts, emotions, and actions in the here and now – gently, creatively, and with support

What is Gestalt Therapy?

Gestalt Therapy is a type of talking therapy that helps you become more aware of your thoughts, feelings, and actions – especially how they show up in the present moment. It’s all about understanding yourself better, connecting with your emotions, and feeling more whole and balanced.

The word “Gestalt” means “whole” in German. The idea is that we feel better when all the parts of ourselves—our thoughts, feelings, and behaviours—are working together instead of feeling disconnected.

What Makes Gestalt Therapy Unique?

Here are a few things that make Gestalt Therapy stand out:

  • Focus on the Here and Now: Instead of spending lots of time going over the past, Gestalt Therapy looks at what you’re experiencing right now—in your body, emotions, and relationships.
  • Exploring Your Feelings: You’ll be encouraged to notice how you really feel (not just what you think), even the feelings you might usually push away.
  • Taking Ownership: Gestalt Therapy helps you understand how you respond to situations, rather than blaming others or feeling stuck.
  • Creative Techniques: It can include experiments or exercises like; role play (e.g. talking to a part of yourself or someone else using an empty chair), movement or drawing to express feelings, noticing body language or physical sensations. These tools help you connect with parts of yourself that words can’t always reach.

What Happens in a Session?

In a Gestalt Therapy session, you’ll:

  • Talk freely about whatever’s on your mind
  • Be gently guided to notice what you’re feeling in the moment
  • Explore how you relate to yourself and others
  • Try new ways of expressing or understanding emotions—if that feels right for you

It’s not about being analysed. Instead, the therapist helps you explore your own experience in a safe, supportive way.

Who Might Find It Helpful?

Gestalt Therapy can support you if you’re:

  • Feeling anxious, low, or stuck in old patterns
  • Struggling with self-confidence or relationships
  • Going through a life change or loss
  • Wanting to feel more connected to yourself and others
  • Looking for a deeper understanding of your emotions

You don’t need to be artistic or expressive—it’s about being curious and open to learning about yourself.

Does It Work?

Yes—research shows Gestalt Therapy can be highly effective, especially for:

  • Anxiety and depression
  • Grief or emotional pain
  • Low self-esteem
  • Feeling disconnected or unsure of who you are

People often say they feel more emotionally aware, empowered, and grounded after working in this way.

In a Nutshell

Gestalt Therapy is a gentle, creative, and empowering approach that helps you:

  • Understand your emotions
  • Let go of patterns that no longer serve you
  • Feel more present and whole

It’s about getting to know yourself—not just in your head, but in your heart and body too.
